The analysis of “Publication of Your Personal Profile”

The essay “Publication of Your Personal Profile”, written by Megan Ramirez, is excellent but not strongly persuasive.
This essay present a main claim that users of Facebook and Myspace put their private lives into public and some strangers will have the right to look up them through these social networking website. Additionally, the counterarguments of it also contain that the social networking website will have a negative impact on users if their profiles are scrutinized by some strangers, such as future bosses and professors. Even though some of the profiles are restricted, they are not secure.
This is an excellent essay because Megan Ramirez presents a clear claim and reasonable examples. However, a persuasive essay should be more logical, especially on the claim. The reason why Facebook and Myspace websites are called social networking websites is that those websites are used for keeping in touch with existing friends and meeting new friends, who are called strangers in her essay. Of course people are willing to add strangers to be friends on Facebook and Myspace because the users are here to meet new friends. Moreover, many of the users know that they are responsible for their pictures on their profiles. Even though there will be no future bosses looking up their profiles, many of the users are not that stupid to put many pictures showing themselves that they are involved in some illegal activities.
In general, this is a very good essay. But it is not strongly persuasive because it is lack of logic.

Analysis of Quotations and Paraphrases in “A Way with Words, or Away with Words”

The essay that I am going to analyze is “A Way with Words, or Away with Words: Effect of Texting and IMing on Language”, written by Timothy Barranco. The reasons why I choose this essay is not only its ideas are short and clear, but also mainly because its quotations and paraphrases are accurately and reasonably used.
There is a very good example about the quotations that “Statistically, they found that ‘the use of short forms… less than 3%’”. Since this is a statistic data, Timothy Barranco arranges it in a quotation form. This data presents that there are only a few of short forms, abbreviations, and emotional language is used in text messages. This quotation is used accurately to support the main idea of that there is little bad impact on the writing of txt users.
On the other hand, the paraphrases are also imported very reasonable. A good example of “So rather than scoff at what is new and different, we should embrace these changes as a healthy addition to our robust and modern English language”. The original sentence is “We should embrace these changes as a healthy addition to our robust and modern English language”. The original sentence is about what we should do and the sentence before it presents the wrong thing that we are doing now. Therefore, Timothy puts this sentence at the end of a paragraph reasonably to give readers a result about what we should do. This paraphrase also supports the main idea that txt is a good trend.
After reading Timothy Barranco’s “A Way with Words, or Away with Words: Effect of Texting and IMing on Language”, we can learn a lot in the quotation and paraphrase aspect. Many of the quotations and paraphrases are used accurately and reasonably.

History Favorites Winners

“A person, who succeeds, is a king, while a person who fails is a prisoner.” This Chinese proverb means that winners will have everything, while losers are just losers. People learn history most from books. However, books are always published by winners and this is the reason why history favorites winners.
There is a very obvious example that, the independence of America. American beat British Kingdom and become independent then. In history, the war is called “Independent War” because the war presents the eager of freedom of Americans. This part of history is certainly written by the new American Federal Government. In contrast, however, if Americans lost the war at that time, those fighters who were seeking for freedom would be called traitors instead of heroes. If so, everything changes now. Another example is illustrated in the article, “Discovering the Truth about Columbus”, which is written by Charles Sugnet and Joanna O’Connell. Columbus is a hero in history because he found the new continental. However, if the “loser”, Native Americans wrote the history, there would probably be some content about Columbus’s bad treatment on them.
Therefore, history is always written by winners and that is why history favorites them.

What I feel after reading the "Two Years in the Melting Pot"

After reading the “Two Years in the Melting Pot”, written by Leki, I feel so agreed with him. It is hard to study in a foreign country since everything seems new and strange to us. Among international students, loneliness is one of biggest problems. That is because that we have no friends in a new place and we speak different languages. Therefore, to see or hear mother tongue in a foreign country would be one of the nicest things in the world.
Since Liu feels really lonely and his need to be with other Chinese seems to be natural, and also, it is a common problem that many of us encountered before. Even if some Chinese who Liu didn’t know before, he would like to talk to them, and stay with them. That is because no matter how well his English is, he can’t speak up what he thinks in his deep heart since he is from a different country, with a different cultural background. On the other hand, I have the same need as Liu’s and I also spend my leisure time with my Chinese friends because I will feel easy, natural, and happy staying with them. Therefore, I think Liu’s need is very normal and common among international students.

Nonverbal Communication Differences and Similarities between China and America

With a long and multi-cultural history, Chinese people are sophisticated in taking advantages of nonverbal languages. Those tons of nonverbal languages, including gestures, eye contack and other body languages, are commonly simply and useful. For example, when a guy give a glance at you, it means that person does not want you to continue what are you talking about. Another example can illurstrate the simplicity in an aparent way. Sometimes when you are busy or not really easy to talk, you can just nod couple of times instead of saying "Hi" or waving your hands.

Nevertheless, as languages differ among countries, nonverb languages usually have their own unique meaning in different countries. In contrast to Chinese, Americans would like to talk to others in a closer distance and prefer more eye contact. Besides those differences, Americans have more interesting and exciting gestures and facial expressions than Chinese, which is because Chinese people usually do no illurstrate a thing in a direct way, while Americans do.

The global world, which is alike to a small town that all the inhabitants on the earth are just like neiberhoods, makes communications much more easier. Since we can ensure that there are must be some kinds of similiarities in nonverbal communications between China and America. A good example is that insteadly saying "Hi", we can simply smile or wave hands to others. Thus, there are many similiarities between Chinese and American nonverbal communications, and Differences as well.

My Aweful First Impression

A story happened in my freshmen year in Liaoning University, China. After the whole year, one of my close girl friends told me I got a holy bad first impression to all of her roommates (four of them), a PLAYBOY image. I never ever think myself in that way but it just happened in my real world. Maybe that was because I usually dress up a little bit, making myself charming, and flirt with some colse girlfriends. Nevertheless, I feel myself not like that and try other ways to portray myself as a reliable, responsible and mature man. For example, I don't flirt any more or speak that much. Now I usually stay quiet and perform really "cool" and that works! My friends told me that I impressed them really a cool man firstly. Although I feel myself reliable and responsible, despite I am not mature enough, which depends on my age, 21. A big boy with not much experience could not have the quality of thinking and behaving in a sensible, adult manner. Anyway, I would say myself 85% successful by impressing others, especially in "the first minutes" as Dr. Leonard Zunin said in his book Contact: The First Four Minutes. Because I'm confident and I feel the image that I give to my friends is 85% alike to the real personality of myself. I know it's not exactly the same but I'm still satisfied because I need to save some space for my close friends to "explore". LOL

Languages Differ in People's Daily Life

It's such a society that full of different ways to speak the same language. Just like in the essay "Mother Tongue", by Amy Tan, even mother and daugther use the same language in contrast ways, informal and formal styles. Some story examples are funny, but they are realistic and undienable. On the other hand, when people study second language like English, there would be couple of English words or phrases in their daily communication. This needs second-language people have a better self control than others.

In my family, my parents speak Chinese formally. In contrast, I'm always speaking informally. Thus there are some problems when we communicate with each other. The words they use are totally out of fashion, like something in 1970s movies. Besides, those sentences sound like in some certain forms. I understand that is because the education at that time was old style and students had to follow the teacher exactly, and then they all speak in the same certain stucture. For our young people, however, words are changable and flexiable. We speak in very casual and informal ways, which are regarded as not good or serious style.

In addition, there also could be some problems when a person has a second language. As comon sense, we understand people speaking different languages have trouble in communication. However, a second language person cannot even realize they add some foreign words in their mother tongue. It is normal but problems come at this time. A good example of myself. I've been studying in US for 17 months before I came back to China for summer. Obviously I add some English words or phrases in my daily Chinese sentences, which I cannot prevent honestly. While my parents usually shouted at me, "Do not speak any more birds language to me!" It's WEIRD.

Anyway, we are family and every problem can be solved. There tons of funny and fantabulous stories about languages and we can conclude that people speaking the same language still have problem between formal and informal styles and second-language people have to control themselves more.

Introduction to Myself

My name is Wenxiao Li (also go by Lee), a 21-year-old big boy from China. Majoring Accounting, which is a great major in University of Delaware, I feel really stressful and get a lot of homework to do, especially because I take 6 classes this semester. Hope to get a valuable job after school. Besides study, I spend time working out a lot. I'm not a tough guy but I am crazy for sports, especially basketball. I'm a huge fun of Allen Iverson but he had gone from Philly. What a pity! To me, the most important thing is family. After spending my summer back in China, I find myself love my family much more than ever. Maybe that's because I've never been apart from family for such a long time, 17 months. Anyhow, everything will be all right since time goes fast, "I'll be back!"
